Introducing one of our newest members Laura Hessler with Hessler Interiors who is also a Florida Chapter Sponsor.
Laura is a breath of fresh air, energetic and up beat and her story reflects her enthusiasium. Enjoy getting to know Laura in the interview below.
Where did you grow up?
I was born in NJ and lived there until I was 11. Then we came to Florida where I went to middle school and high school.
When and why did you move to Florida?
It was my father’s dream to own a Benjamin Moore Paint store. He looked all over the country for several years. Eventually there was an opportunity in Delray Beach which he jumped on. So in 1994 my dad, mom, sister, brother and I all made the move down to South Florida.
How did you get started in this industry?
I kind of got started by accident. I wasn’t involved in the family business much growing up. I worked in the paint department after college, but went on to move back to North Carolina, where I had attended college. I ended up doing advertising for the local newspaper for about 4 years. I eventually missed being near my family and decided to move back to Florida. So I decided to temporarily work in the family business until I figured outmy next move. To my surprise, I ended up loving what I was doing, specifically in the decorating division of the store. I found a passion I didn’t know I had and have moved full force ahead in the business ever since.
What inspires you?
My favorite part of what I do is helping our customers to create a space that they love to live in. Most people pride themselves in their homes and work hard in order to have that. I love being a part of improving their space so their home is somewhere they can feel comfortable and excited about.
Tell us about one of your biggest accomplishments or design success stories.
My biggest accomplishment has been growing the decorating side of our family business. Previously Hessler Paint & Decorating, we are now officially two separate businesses; Hessler Paint and Hessler Interiors. With the growth we have had over recent years and the expansion of our product offerings, it made sense for us to separate the two focuses of our main store. Being a part of the evolution of that is pretty cool.
What’s on your bucket list?
More travel! I just went to Greece in July and Puerto Rico in November. so now I have the travel bug and am hoping to get to Ireland, New Zealand and Italy in the near future.
Complete these sentences.
I dream of: a world with a slower pace. Things have become so busy in our everyday lives. I wish we could take a step back and remember patience and being in the moment a bit more.
Something people don’t know about me is: I am very stubborn. Once I get something in my head, I usually find a way to make it happen. And often, that leads to learning things the hard way.
What I like to do when I am not working is: yoga, boating and playing with my dog.
Why did you join IFDA and how long have you been a member?
My aunt, Lynn Sciarrone, has been a member for years. She was always talking to me about it, but since I am not a designer, I didn’t think it was a good fit for me. But, then I found out that they are very welcoming to vendors and all businesses in the trade. So, I felt comfortable getting involved. We became a member late in 2016 and I am so happy to be a part of this group.
What is your best advice to someone who is new to IFDA about maximizing their membership experience?
Get involved! Attend events and get to know the other members. It is such a wonderful group and there are so many talented members who are a wealth of knowledge.
What has been the best part of being involved with IFDA?
I love the energy of this group. I have found everyone in the group to be very welcoming and supportive of each other. There are no big egos or competitiveness. It is great to have a group of people who get excited about the same things as you do or face the same challenges. There is a wonderful sense of solidarity and belonging.
We are lucky to have Laura on board! Together with Lynn Sciarrone VP of Programming she and the team at Hessler Paint and Hessler Interiors recently hosted a fun Cocktails and Connections at their flagship store in Delray Beach. They have three other locations in South Florida. You can read all about the event on our blog.
